Manic Mommies 2011 & Mel Robbin’s New Book!

I have been wanting to share my fun, yet brief experience at Manic Mommies Escape 2011! This week has been crazy-busy. I think crazy-busy should be my new catchphrase. Paris has, “That’s hot,” & I have, “I’m crazy-busy, make it quick.” Every night, I am wishing for a few more hours to get things done. I know I am preaching to a choir of moms who feel the same way, so think of this as my quick vent session. There were doctor appointments, projects, more projects, more doctor appointments, meetings, and everything else that a normal week entails. Thankfully, everyone checked out at their doctor appointments and we are closing out this week looking forward to what the weekend has to offer.

Back to Manic Mommies Escape 2011… my only regret is that I was not able to stay longer. I had an amazing breakfast, met some great gals from Texas, Massachusetts (thank you spell check), California, and other places from around the country. I got to share with them some things about New Orleans culture and traditions and they seemed to be doing a good job discovering things like go-cups, hurricanes in a glass, and delicious New Orleans cuisine all on their own!

Erin and Kristen of Manic Mommies recorded their podcast of the week live. I now subscribe via i-tunes and, like most of the moms at my table, I listen to them while on the treadmill. There is something about laughing out loud, about the reality of motherhood and life in genera, while exercising that makes the time go by faster. Their honesty and lightheartedness is a perfect combination! What are you waiting for? Head over to itunes and subscribe.

The most inspiring part of the morning was the keynote speaker, Mel Robbins. She is a lawyer who found her niche in media as a radio host, relationship expert, and life coach. She is the host of A&E’s new show, Monster-in-law, where she works with spouses and their in-laws. I took notes from her speech  and want to share with you the highlights of what I learned and have been trying to put into action. I am  reading her book, Stop Saying You’re Fine: Discover a More Powerful You, and it’s hard to put down because her writing easy to relate to.

The Top 3 Things I learned from Mel Robbins:

1. Change is not linear!
You don’t just get from point A to point B in the blink of an eye. It takes work and there will be ups and downs.

2. Admit What you Want!
Be honest and admit what you what. The second you admit what you want your mind’s first step is to bring up all of the obstacles that prevent you from getting there.

3. Brain Dump!
Think of your brain as a glass full of water. If you add more water to a full glass it will just overflow and not be retained. You have to pour out some water before you can add more and you need to dump everything you can from your brain into a notebook. It’s okay if organizing your pictures is on your list everyday for three years =)

Another thing she recommends is the Snooze Alarm test. Force yourself to wake up and get out of bed thirty minutes early. If you can force yourself do that, then you can force yourself to do anything . If you can’t force yourself… then screw yourself. For example, if going to the gym is a challenge for you, then invite a friend because if she is meeting you there then you are going to force yourself to go.

This is just a tiny amount of great information and tips included in the book. I talked to her about making a decision regarding goals in life. There are multiple things that I would like to accomplish, but do I pick just one or do I attempt them all and see what sticks? Her advice was to pick one and drive hard toward your goal for at least 30 days and see what happens. Hence the advice, “Just pick!”
