My love of the city of New Orleans comes from my grandmother, who often shares her favorite stories with me. Especially the ones about not shopping on Canal or Royal Street without your hat and gloves on and the days where men only dressed in suits and ties and woman wore skirts and pearls. She would take the streetcar from her house and go shopping downtown dressed in her best. Oh, how I would love to be able to go back in time to be a part of that. Until someone invents time travel, I’ll have to stick to visiting and sharing places ingrained in New Orleans history with my son. Topping the list of historic hotels in New Orleans is the Hotel Monteleone.
Established in 1886, the Hotel Monteleone, has proudly stood as one of the first landmarks in the famous French Quarter and is currently celebrating its 125th anniversary. The hotel is known as the “Grande Dame of the French Quarter” and her décor matches her royal nickname. I had the pleasure of spending the weekend at the Hotel Monteleone for the International Food Bloggers Conference and the history of the hotel is evident throughout. We were lucky enough to have the hotel’s general manager share the story of the hotel and how it survived great economic hardship though American ingenuity.
This holiday season take your children to the Hotel Monteleone for Monte the Lion’s Children’s Tea. Monte, is the friendly, lovable mascot of the hotel. For many years the hotel has gifted guest who order a crib a stuffed Monte and from their Monte has become the star of his own holiday tea. Many New Orleans’ families take part in the tradition of attending holiday tea with Monte. Joining Monte will be Santa, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman and Santa’s elves. Also, Mrs. Claus will be there to read classic Christmas stories and share some delicious treats.
In celebration of the Hotel Monteleone’s 125th anniversary, Cornell P. Landry and Sean Gautreaux, authored and illustrated a touching story book telling the tales of Monte the Lion throughout the hotel. The story of the book is cute and the illustrations are stunning! What else would you expect from the same people who brought us GoodNight Nola. According to Andrea Thornton, director of sales and marketing for the Hotel Monteleone, “We’ve had an eventful year celebrating the Hotel’s 125th Anniversary. This Christmas season, we’re particularly looking forward to having locals and guests participate in all of our festivities as we have 125 great reasons to celebrate.”
