Designer Knitwear from Scarlett+Atticus

In the world of fashion, the popularity of knitwear continues to rise, but it is difficult to find high-quality, individual pieces that aren’t mass produced from a machine. When I think of knitwear, I think of an art form. As a child, I would watch my grandmother for hours and hours knitting the next grandchild-to-be a piece made just for them. She could twirl her needles and yarn with grace and ease. There were a few occasions that she took the time to try to teach me but I never got past the first row. It wasn’t until about a year ago that I read a popular book about a Friday night knitting club, that I realized I wanted to learn the tradition of knitting. I started with a bookmark, moved on to a washcloth, and then a scarf. (Note: a scarf is just a really long washcloth). I called my grandmother and told her that, after all this time, I got past the first row! She was so glad that someone from the next generation of our family had learned. I never got the chance to show her my humble creations but every time I pick up a pair of knitting needles and attempt a new stitch (I still can’t get pass Knit 1, Purl 1), I think of her and I sitting in her living room laughing and talking while her hands and fingers whirled out a new creation.

If you’re like me and appreciate intricate and hand-knitted pieces, but don’t have the skills to produce your own then look to Scarlett+Atticus, a fashion brand that specializes in designing and hand-making knitwear. Started in 2010, they combine modern and vintage aesthetics through traditional knitting and produce high-quality, exclusive individual pieces. They take custom orders and have merchandise available including scarfs, hats, legwarmers, hair accessories, handbags, baby items, pet items, and home decor. These are the types of items that you will cherish and can hand down to the next generation.

I had the honor to review a baby’s hand-knit LSU hat in two of my favorite colors: purple and gold. My first impression was that I wish my stitches looked like these because it’s obvious that Scarlett+Atticus uses high quality yarn and that the person behind the knitting needles is a seasoned knitter. The neat thing is that if you order your little one a hat just like this one, it will be a unique piece because no two hand knit items are exactly the same even from the same knitter. If you are due to have a baby in the future or know someone who is, hand knit items are the perfect keepsake gift for mom and baby. My only regret is that I didn’t know about Scarlett+Atticus before my son came home from the hospital because I guarantee that he would have been wearing his LSU hat in all of his coming home pictures. Thankfully, we did have an impromptu photography session with him showing off his LSU pride while wearing his Scarlett+Atticus hat.

As you can see, knit wear is a great addition to any photography session.

Anytime you give someone an exclusive, hand-knit piece from Scarlett+Atticus you are letting them know that they are special and unique just like a piece of knitted art. It’s a perfect gift idea for a new baby, graduation, birthday, anniversary, or just because. Don’t think that knitted pieces are just for women because Scarlett+Atticus has a line of knitwear for the man in your life. Customize your piece by selecting any combination of your favorite colors, desired textures, and preferred design. Maybe it’s the colors of your favorite sports team, colors that match your favorite winter coat, or the colors of your alma mater. The combination of ideas is endless.
